The design is generally traced back to 1807, when cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi created a new style of chair at the request of Stefano Rivarola, then president of the local Economic Society. Descalzi's idea was remarkably simple: create a chair that was elegant and refined but considerably lighter than much of the heavy furniture being produced at the time. The result became known as the Chiavarina, after the town of Chiavari. Its delicate appearance was deceptive. Skilled craftsmanship and carefully selected timber allowed the chair to remain strong while using relatively little material.

Rather than using thick sections of timber, craftsmen produced slender legs, rails and spindles joined together with considerable precision.
